NEBOSH reviewed its International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety in 2026. Teaching of the revised syllabus began on 2 February 2026, and the first assessments under it took place from 4 March 2026.
It is still the qualification most employers ask for when they hire a safety officer, in Pakistan and across the Gulf. What changed is the names of its two units and the way they are assessed.
New names for the two units
- IG1 is now GIC1, the unit on managing health and safety.
- IG2 is now GIC2, the practical risk assessment.
That is why you see both NEBOSH IGC and NEBOSH GIC in job adverts and course lists. They mean the same certificate.
How the units are assessed
GIC1 is a scenario-based assessment you complete at home, with 24 hours to finish it.
GIC2 is still a practical risk assessment of a real workplace. It is now submitted online, within ten working days of the GIC1 assessment, and marked with points: the pass mark is 60%.
Results
The results of both units are issued on the same day, about 60 working days after the GIC1 assessment, so you learn the outcome of the whole qualification at once.
