People starting in health and safety often ask us whether to take IOSH Managing Safely or the NEBOSH International General Certificate first. The answer depends on the job you want.
IOSH Managing Safely: for managers and supervisors
IOSH Managing Safely is a short course. It gives managers and supervisors in any industry the practical basics: how to assess and control risks, how to investigate incidents and how to measure performance. It is certified by IOSH in the United Kingdom.
It suits you if safety is part of your job, but not the whole of it.
NEBOSH General Certificate: for safety officers
The NEBOSH International General Certificate goes much further. It teaches how to manage health and safety across a workplace, and ends with a risk assessment of a real one. It is the qualification most employers ask for when they hire a safety officer, in Pakistan and in the Gulf.
It suits you if you want health and safety to be your career.
Taking both
Many of our learners start with OSHA 30-hour training together with IOSH Managing Safely, and go on to NEBOSH. After some years in the job, the OTHM and NVQ diplomas at Level 6 and 7 are the next step.
